Motswi’s Story

Dynamic Business Woman

For this issue of our newsletter we have visited a dynamic business woman, Ms Mahlao Irene Motswi, who is from Mohlakamosoma, near Ga-Modjadji, in Limpopo Province. She has been in business for over 15 years, and in 2018 she was titled as the ‘Best Larger Loans Program (LLP) Client’.

Mahlao’s business experience tracks back to 2002, when she was running a spaza shop and a poultry business. Later, she expanded her business portfolio by including a tavern. However, due to legal requirements of operating a tavern, she was forced to close down her spaza shop and poultry business to operate only the tavern.

As her business required more funding, she moved to SEF’s Larger Loans Program (LLP) in 2016. Since then, Mahlao has been able to employ 6 people in her businesses. She currently runs two taverns, one in Mohlakamosoma and another in Meadowlands, Soweto, which was started by her 4 years ago.

When asked about some of the challenges she has come across in her business, Mahlao mentioned the difficulties of having a vehicle for stock purchasing, which occasionally requires repairs. Nevertheless, being a problem solver at heart, she plans to purchase a new van to mitigate this problem.

As a closing remark she mentioned: “I am thankful for the opportunity to have joined SEF. Because of this, I have been able to take all my children to school and create a better future for them. With the introduction of Client Business Community (CBC) meetings within the LLP, I have been educated to manage my business finances, manage competition and have a better understanding of my target market.”

Like Johana, many of our clients are skilled entrepreneurs just lacking the capital to get started. A little credit goes a long way towards helping these women reach their full potential.
